Vienna
Vienna, city of beauty, music, art and history. City of my heart; three years of my childhood passed getting to know the cultural heritage of this jewel. The city centre seems over burdened with sculpture, one cannot turn a corner without finding another statue, sculpted facade, church or monument. Palaces, churches, coffee shops.
Vienna in her heyday was a center for the arts, rivalling Paris itself. She was the center of the Hapsburg Empire, which held sway over much of Europe.
Medieval Europe was a superstitious place where the struggle between the devil and the church ruled every facet of life.
The Pest Seule at left was commissioned at the end of the plague epidemic; the kaiser pleaded with God to spare the city, and his bargain was to build a monument to the dead, and here it still stands.

_The photo in the header is of the Stephans Dom (or
St Stephens Cathedral) situated at the center of the old city. Legend
has it that the architect who designed the Dom made a pact with Satan to
complete it on time. When the due date came, he reneged on his
contract, and fell to his death from the scaffold, pushed by an enraged
devil. It took another
architect to complete the church, and if you visit, look closely at the
two
towers at the end of the church, and you will see the difference in
style to
the steeple.
